Public Speaking (2/22/2026)

This month's class was a focus on building the skill of public speaking and was hosted by Alabama State University. ASU let us use a private dining room in the Fred Shuttlesworth Commons for our classroom and served us dinner at the end of class. Huge thank you to them for being so hospitable to our students. We were also so glad that Miss ASU, Sydney Morgan Guy, and the SGA President, Dejuan Trotman, were able to spend a little time with our students and talk about why they chose Alabama State.

Jennifer Anderson (Community and Economic Development Strategist, Founder of JSA Consulting) was our main speaker and did a great job of both teaching the skill of public speaking and having our students put that skill to practice. Each student had a turn at crafting a presentation, practicing with a small group, and then presenting to all of us. Jennifer then gave immediate feedback on what the student did well and what they can work on.

Our students will now be able to put all of that into their presentations at the youth conference they have been working on. On March 29th our students will use their public speaking skill, as well as all the leadership skills they have developed, to put on a conference for high school students around the city. This will be a great opportunity to bring young leaders around the city together to grow in leadership, innovation, networking, and connection (LINC). We are very excited for this event and can't wait to see the impact our LINC MGM students have on our great city!

Miriam Young, LAMP High School, finishing her portion of the group's presentation. The whole group did a great job in preparation and using the public speaking tips taught by Mrs. Jennifer.
